Chew Valley Choral Society

Welcome

Rehearsals start on 23rd January for our next concert on 18th May. We are looking for new members for all parts: soprano, alto, tenor, and bass. If you would like to sing with us, you are very welcome to come to our first rehearsal and join in straight away. We rehearse on Tuesdays from 7.30 – 9.30pm, at Church Hall, Church Lane, Chew Stoke, BS40 8TX.

If you would like to try us out first, we will be holding a ‘taster session’ on Tuesday 30 January.

The taster session is a chance for you to sing alongside regular members to see how you get on. Some music-reading ability is an advantage but support will be given to those with less confidence.

The session is free of charge. You are welcome to turn up on the night - no need to register in advance, but to give us some idea of numbers it will be helpful if you let us know if you plan to attend.

Welcome to the website of the Chew Valley Choral Society. We are a friendly mixed-voice choir of singers from across the Chew Valley and beyond.

Our repertoire includes much-loved choral works, but we also sing shorter pieces from the Renaissance to the 21st century and new compositions. As a classical group we generally ask that people can read music - that said, this is not an essential skill and there is no audition. We rehearse thoroughly so that everyone learns their parts ready for the concert and can perform in a professional manner on the day. We are often joined by professional soloists and accompanists, and also work with orchestras from time to time. In addition, there is the excitement of joining up with other choirs and groups in the area to take on larger scale projects in full-scale concert halls and cathedrals.

The group is welcoming and friendly, and the rehearsals are enjoyable and rewarding as well as challenging at times. It is a great opportunity to sing wonderful music together with other singers and appreciate the joys and proven benefits which live singing brings.

The choir is very fortunate to have an excellent accompanist in Rowan Vince, and is directed by internationally renowned composer, choir trainer, and organist David Bednall. David is Sub Organist of Bristol Cathedral and also directs Bristol Chamber Choir as well as having an extensive freelance career. He has much experience of working with groups of all abilities and works hard to ensure that each group realizes their potential in the most rewarding way possible.
